2012 Festival Artwork

Albert Dreher, 2012 Festival Artist

Originally from Colorado, Albert Dreher was exposed early to the timeless beauty of the area's indigenous landscapes and natural mysteries of ancient cultures. His fascination for the sacred power places of the ancient American Indian grew with his increasing desire to transform his career from that of Advertising Designer to Fine Artist.

In 1981, Dreher initiated 20 plus years of successful gallery shows and museum exhibits by consigning ten pieces to the former Scharf Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was his first one-man show. Dreher quickly became known as a pioneer in oil wash techniques and an artist on the leading edge of contemporary painting. Everything in a Dreher painting flows; space, color, time, art and reality. The circular sun/moon symbol seen in all Dreher's pieces is a constant symbol of new beginnings verses passing time.

His favorite subjects are the power places of the prehistoric American Indians (The Anasazi) - especially the ancient kivas and cliff dwellings he finds hidden in the sacred mountains and mesas of the Southwest. Other subjects in Dreher's flowing paintings include the traditional Mexican adobe architecture and landscapes of the Mid-west and west farmlands. "Kivas," notes Dreher, "are structures where sacred rituals took place.  The Ancient Ones enjoyed a rich religious life and made very little distinction between reality and fantasy."

The Art

Dreher now lives and works in Tucson, Arizona and his work days are not long enough to supply the demand for his unusual oil wash paintings, which can be seen in galleries throughout the United States.

In 2007 Dreher painted the cover art for the Compact Disc "Melodies of Native Americans." In 2006 Dreher was the featured artist for “Music In the Mountains" Classic Symphony Orchestra Season Promotion,Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Durango & Pagosa Springs Symphony Orchestra and the 200th Anniversary of Mesa Verde National Monument. Dreher has also been awarded the San Juan Symphony Orchestra Program Cover, the cover art for the Taos, Angel Fire, Dixon, Eagle Nest, Embudo, Penasco, Questa, Red River and Vellarde Telephone Book. Dreher was commissioned by Author TK. Lebeau to illustrate the five book covers for her Crystal Soul Merge Series.  Dreher has received featured article in Focus/Santa Fe Magazine; The Santa Fean; City Magazine,  Albuquerque; New Mexico Magazine; and Colorado Magazine, formerly Denver Magazine as "Denver's Most Likely to Succeed."
